A bit after getting into a relationship with a transgender person, you learn what “dysphoria” is. Dysphoria is described as the feeling of being in an uncomfortable mood, such as restless, sad, depressed, anxious, or irritable. Of course, if you are in a relationship with a transgender person, you know it’s much worse than a silly definition. You know, to some extent, the self-loathing, envy, and questioning that comes with dysphoria. You know that although they feel it strongest, they aren’t the only ones it affects. You have somewhat of a sympathy pain when they feel dysphoric.
You can generally tell if your partner is feeling dysphoric because they:
- Are frequently asking questions about your past relationships with cisgender people
- Express negative feelings about transition; that they never will
- Express envy for cisgender people
- Express negative feelings about their appearance and body
Of course, for everyone, it’s different. Take the time to understand why your partner is feeling dysphoric when he/she is. Make sure you understand though, that it’s not your fault. It just happens.
To try and ease their dysphoria, you can:
- Find them a distraction, such as playing a game or watching a movie
- Listen to their worries and comfort them
- Try and boost their self-confidence with compliments
What eases their dysphoria depends on what they like and dislike. Try talking to your partner about what you should do when dysphoria hits and how to recognize it when it does. Remember that you can’t control anyone’s emotions and it’s not your fault.
If anyone would like to add to the lists, let me know and I’ll put them on there. Seeing as I don’t have dysphoria, it would be really helpful to hear from a transgender person on this topic. Hope this helps a bit.
